Bio

Raised in Hong Kong and Vancouver, brothers Caleb and Brian Chan are creatively at home in mixed contexts. They write with a wide palette of colors, nuanced imaginations, and a deep admiration of music from many spaces. A continuous curiosity in both traditional conventions and new boundaries of sonic expression grew naturally. What emerged from this lifelong collaboration is music that is dynamic and intersects organic textures, modern orchestra, and experimental synthesis. Coupled with a love for compelling narrative, the brothers provide a unique voice to picture by crafting thoughtful scores.

In film and TV,  live-action projects include Season 2 of Alert: Missing Persons Unit (Fox), The Thundermans Return (Nickelodeon), Allegiance (CBC), Panhandle (Sony/Roku) and Sam Raimi’s anthology series 50 States of Fright (Roku). Animated titles include Pinecone and Pony (DreamWorks / Apple TV+), Angry Birds: Summer Madness,(Netflix), and Team Zenko Go (DreamWorks / Netflix). Their arrangements of Beyonce and Sza songs have been featured in Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. In recent years, they have garnered 4 Canadian Screen Award nominations, 2 CASMA nominations and 3 Leo Award wins for their scores.

With an aptitude to create music that reaches diverse audiences, Caleb’s range of work spans from independent projects and short films, to televised series and theatrical features such as My Little Pony: The Movie (Emily Blunt, Zoe Saldana). As a prolific arranger with over 250 song arrangements and productions, he has collaborated with dozens of artists and orchestrated two Emmy-nominated songs. He is an 11-time Leo Award nominee and holds a masters in composition from the University of Toronto.

Adept at both the creative and technical, Brian has appeared on over a hundred records as an arranger and session multi-instrumentalist, collaborating with artists such as Jordan Klassen, Dear Rouge and Andy Shauf. Prior to focusing on music for screen media, he was a recording engineer for the CBC, capturing some of Canada’s premiere ensembles and bands such as Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, and The New Pornographers. In 2020, His recording of the Chor Leoni Men’s Choir was nominated for a Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year.  Brian holds a masters in sound recording from McGill University.

Beyond scoring, the brothers join to form Heis. Their latest instrumental album, Good Weather, is a collection of slow-moving and meditative pieces for an isolating time. In addition, as arrangers, performers, and producers, they enjoy frequent collaborations with indie and pop artists in studio and on stage. They also make up two-thirds of the songwriting collective Aardwolves, whose tunes have been featured on Batwoman, Heartland, and Sportsnet.
