Stanley A. Smith Scores Upcoming MPI and BET Original Film ‘Kemba’

Composer Stanley A. Smith (he/him) has scored upcoming film Kemba, an MPI Original produced in association with BET Original Films. Directed by Kelley Kali and based on the true story of executive producer and now criminal justice advocate Kemba Smith, the story follows a sheltered college student who unknowingly falls in love with a drug kingpin and gets involved in his drug-dealings. She ultimately receives a heavy sentence for her boyfriend's crimes and becomes the focus of a campaign driven by the black community to free her from the criminal justice system.

Kemba will be world premiering at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival on Nov. 8, screening at the Black Harvest Film Festival on Nov. 9 and 11 in Chicago, and again at the St. Louis International Film Festival on Nov. 12.

In addition to Kemba, the Black Harvest Film Festival will also be screening another film scored by Stanley, Betye Saar: Ready To Be A Warrior, which has previously won best Documentary at the Burbank International Film Festival and was an official selection at this year’s Pavilion Afrique.
