Ghiya Rushidat Scores Documentary “Three Promises”

Composer Ghiya Rushidat (she/her) has scored the emotionally raw documentary short Three Promises, which had its world premiere at the 2023 Visions du Reél International Film Festival in April. Directed by the son Yousef Srouji, the film blends present-day narration with family footage recorded by his mother during the 2000s military upheaval in the West Bank. Looking back at the footage, Yousef asks why his mother chose to record their daily lives during such a period of suffering and fear, all the while rediscovering his mother's love, a stolen childhood, and the indomitable will to survive as a family.

While on the surface there emerges the heartrending portrait of everyday life in times of war, it is the staggering beauty of a mother’s love that is revealed between the lines. Blending the voice of the present with impressive family footage, Yousef Srouji completes the story begun by Suha, thus averting the act of forgetting, both personal and collective.
